Architect of the Modern Expression

A Voice That Refuses to Whisper
In a cultural landscape that often favors palatability and polish, Vanessa Racchumi is a rare force—unafraid, unfiltered, and brilliantly strange. Her work does not fit neatly into boxes, and that’s precisely the point. She’s not interested in clean edges or defined lanes. She is building a visual language out of contradiction: grotesque yet delicate, eerie yet beautiful, personal yet universal. To experience her art is to step into a living fever dream — one that doesn't end when your eyes look away, but rather, lingers in the psyche like a memory you can’t quite shake.

Mediums That Mirror Her Mind
A Jersey City-based artist and tattooer, Racchumi’s creative reach spans mediums, moods, and dimensions. Her paintings, illustrations, and tattoos are equal parts story and séance—portals into a mind that mines the depths of the subconscious with fearless precision. Each piece she produces feels like a relic from a parallel universe, excavated and offered to the viewer as both a mirror and a map. You don’t simply look at Racchumi’s work. You experience it. You decode it. Sometimes, it even haunts you.

A Kaleidoscope of Influences
Her influences are as eclectic as they are iconic: the dark whimsy of Tim Burton, the psychological intensity of Stephen King, the surreal horror of John R. Dilworth (Courage the Cowardly Dog), and the punk grotesquerie of Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim). These cultural echoes manifest in her creations not as imitation, but as raw ingredients—distorted, inverted, and reassembled into something wholly her own. The result is a style that feels at once familiar and completely alien.

A Symphony of Shadows and Psychedelia
Her work balances gothic romanticism with acid-toned psychedelia, grunge-era aesthetics with medieval folklore. At times, her figures appear to emerge from the pages of a forbidden fairytale; at others, they resemble the static-stung hallucinations of a broken TV from 1997. Racchumi draws with the urgency of someone translating visions—her lines are jagged yet intentional, her compositions dense with symbolism, vulnerability, and soul.
Rooted in Evolution
What makes Racchumi particularly compelling is that her style is in constant motion. She resists creative stagnation with a quiet rebellion, approaching each new work as a kind of metamorphosis. “I’m still evolving,” she says—not as an apology, but as a promise. Unlike many artists who cling to a signature look, Racchumi sees her portfolio as a living organism, shifting shape with her inner world. She is comfortable in transition, rooted in her restlessness.

From Memory to Medium
This shapeshifting spirit is what gives her art its unmistakable electricity. One piece might explore a grim, medieval underworld. Another might channel absurdist sci-fi or scratchy post-punk illustration. Yet all of it pulses with the same essence: a deep, almost mythic connection to self-expression and emotional truth.
Early Imprints of Rebellion
Racchumi’s creative journey began in childhood—nurtured by an environment rich with music, art, and tattoo culture. She was raised among her father’s bandmates and friends, many of whom were musicians and artists, and found herself immersed in the expressive freedom of tattoo parlors and underground studios from an early age. While navigating ADHD, art became her grounding force. It was the one space where time stopped and her attention became absolute. That early intimacy with chaos and creativity shaped not only her aesthetic, but her perspective: art is not just a skill—it’s survival.

Between Skin and Canvas
Today, Racchumi moves effortlessly between gallery exhibitions and tattoo conventions, between sketchbooks and skin. She is a resident artist at Heart In Mind Tattoo in Jersey City, where her clients receive more than tattoos—they become collaborators in a visual dialogue rooted in memory, vulnerability, and storytelling. Her designs are never generic; they are intimate, symbolic, and deeply original.
A Presence in the Underground
Her work has graced the walls of major alternative art events, including exhibits at Liberty Science Center—one of her favorite venues to showcase her creations. She’s also been featured in a host of underground shows across New York City: from ChiChi’s NYC to Til Death NYC and Nowadays, where her art exists in communion with other creators who share her love of the strange, the sacred, and the subversive.
Follow the Vision
And for those wanting to follow her world more closely, Racchumi’s Instagram—@uhmmnesssa—serves as a vibrant window into her ever-evolving universe. There, she posts her newest artwork, upcoming shows, tattoo availability, and exclusive previews of works in progress. It’s also where collectors and potential clients can reach out for commissions and tattoo inquiries. In a digital age saturated with imagery, her page stands apart: not a portfolio, but a living, breathing sketchbook in real time.
The Studio and the Future
Looking ahead, Racchumi has her sights set on establishing a permanent studio space—a sanctuary where her art can continue to grow without compromise. A space not just to create, but to curate a full environment reflective of her inner world. The vision is bigger than a gallery. It’s a headquarters for a movement—a place where the beautifully bizarre is celebrated, not sanitized.
Not Just an Artist—A Movement
Vanessa Racchumi is more than an artist. She is a world-builder. A myth-maker. A conduit for the parts of ourselves we often hide. In her hands, the grotesque becomes sacred, the strange becomes sublime, and the chaotic becomes divine.
If art is meant to challenge, to comfort, to confront, and to connect—then Racchumi is not just succeeding.
She is leading.
Interview with Vanessa
When did you begin your journey as an artist, and where did it all start? At an early age, I was drawn to art. I spend a lot of time drawing, painting, and coming up with designs for tattoos.
What was your main source of inspiration to pursue a career in art?
As a child, my father would always take me to his friends house. They were in a band together. Many of his friends were artists. Not only did they create music, but other art as well. He also took me to many different tattoo parlors at a young age, which gave me the inspiration to go into art. Growing up with ADHD it was hard for me to focus, but drawing was the one activity that had my full attention.
Which artists do you collaborate with or draw inspiration from?
My main inspiration is from Tim Burton, Stephen King, and John Dilworth (who was behind Courage the Cowardly Dog). I enjoy art that is dark and makes you think. I enjoy Gothic tones and psychedelic art, and they are some of the best to do it.

Do you have a distinct style or theme in your work? If so, how would you describe it?
I don't have a style i am locked into. I like to think that i am still evolving. I tend to play with Gothic, medieval, and grunge themes.
Where can people view or purchase your artwork?
I post everything on my Instagram. @_uhmmnesssa And the shop I work at heart in mind Tattoo Jersey City.
What are some of the most recent exhibitions or shows you’ve participated in?
Starting from January, I participated in an art convention located at the liberty science center, which also happens to be one of my favorite places to show my art. Within the past couple weeks I also got to take part of amazing shows in New York City like chichisnyc,Tildeathnyc, and nowadays, the best part was that a lot of the artists here were more of my style, so I made a lot of good connections.
What projects are you currently working on or have planned for the near future?
I’m currently working on several paintings as well as tattoo designs. For the upcoming future I am looking to find a studio to set up all my artwork in a permanent location and grow my business.
How can people stay updated on your latest work and follow your journey?
People can stay up-to-date on my latest work by following my Instagram page for constant updates. Also, I post which shows and events that I will bring my art to, and I also take inquiries for tattoos on my page as well.
