Artistic Journey & Background

Ian Actual, a visionary artist based in Queens, New York, has developed a body of work that reflects the diverse influences of his upbringing and artistic journey. Raised in the Five Towns of Long Island, Ian has created a unique niche for himself, blending the grit and raw energy of urban street art with the clean, polished aesthetics of suburban contemporary. His work draws from the vast and varied cultural landscape that surrounds him, weaving elements from cult classic movies, video games, comics, and music into an evolving, layered tapestry. His art doesn’t just depict; it narrates, drawing viewers into both personal and collective memories.

Education and Artistic Development

Ian’s journey through art took a leap forward at the renowned Pratt Institute, where he honed his craft and deepened his understanding of various artistic disciplines. Over time, his portfolio expanded, showcasing his mastery of multiple techniques and styles. From mixed media pop art to hyper-realistic hand-painted portraits, Ian’s fluidity in approach sets him apart.

Celebrated Series: “Make The Call”

One of the most celebrated series in Ian’s portfolio is “Make The Call”, a collection that explores the concept of nostalgia and the rapid evolution of technology. At the heart of this series lies the public payphone—a once ubiquitous part of urban life that has now all but vanished from the streets. For Ian, the payphone represents a grittier, bygone era that resonates deeply with his artistic vision. By transforming these once-functional objects into works of art, Ian imbues them with new meaning, prompting viewers to reflect on how communication has changed, and how much of that past era is still with us today.

In the “Make The Call” series, Ian Actual’s mixed media pop art sensibilities shine. The centerpiece of each artwork is a real payphone, wrapped in a vibrant, pop-art style portrait of mysterious women. These women, often shadowy and alluring, seem to beckon viewers, daring them to lift the receiver and connect with an almost forgotten world. This intersection of reality and fantasy is key to Ian’s approach. The payphone—a tangible object—becomes a portal to an imagined narrative, making the artwork not only visually striking but also conceptually rich. The tactile nature of the payphones, coupled with their contextual significance, invites an intimate interaction, bridging the gap between art and audience.

Standout Series: “Life of the Party”

Another standout series in Ian’s oeuvre is “Life of the Party”, a playful yet profound exploration of nightlife and personal freedom. In these works, the artist takes the disco ball, an iconic symbol of revelry and celebration, and gives it a surreal twist. The paintings feature women with faceless bodies, their heads replaced by gleaming disco balls. Through this juxtaposition of the familiar and the fantastical, Ian Actual taps into the spirit of nightlife, where identities blur, and the collective joy of the dance floor takes over.

The “Life of the Party” series brings together two of Ian's greatest strengths: his hyper-realistic brushwork and his ability to evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. The intricate detail of the disco balls, with their tiny reflective surfaces capturing light from every angle, is rendered with astonishing precision. This realism contrasts beautifully with the anonymity of the figures, whose faceless forms embody the carefree, uninhibited spirit of nightlife. It’s a celebration of both the individual and the collective experience of letting go on the dance floor, and it raises questions about the role of identity in such spaces—are these figures dancing away from their pasts, or towards a new future?|

Dynamic and Thought-Provoking Portfolio

Beyond these two series, Ian Actual’s portfolio is packed with dynamic, thought-provoking works that challenge viewers to see everyday objects and experiences in new ways. His pieces are not just aesthetic statements; they are invitations to reflect, to engage, and to connect with broader cultural conversations. The versatility of his craft and his capacity to blend realism with pop culture imagery make his work accessible yet deeply layered, appealing to a wide range of audiences.

Interview with Ian

How did you develop your passion for art, and who influenced your artistic journey? I have been an artist since I can remember. as a kid i would lay on the floor for hours drawing and drawing. I was lucky enough to have the talent passed onto me from my grandmother. Arlene Cornell, who was an amazing watercolorist and well known throughout the Rockaways NY. She would always help to push my artistic abilities and help change the ways I would approach my art for the better until unfortunately when she passed earlier this year.

What was your main source of inspiration to pursue a career in art? For me and I'm sure for plenty of artists out there as well, after I saw the documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop. I said well I can do this. It is more than possible. That was about 6-7 years ago. With the encouragement and support from close friends and family I've been able to really run with this dream.

Do you have a distinct style or theme in your work? If so, how would you describe it? Styles and themes mannnn i always seem to change my subjects and overall styles too often. I never really settle in for too long. still trying to find that trademark steeze. but then again people I'm close with say I'm nuts and even though a lot of pieces are different they can always tell I painted it. Themes range from overly sexual substance infused nightlife to nerdy moments of vintage sci-fi, video game and comic nostalgia. Where can people view or purchase your artwork? People can find my work digitally through me online via instagram @ian_actual & ianactual.com and ianactual.com. In real life the good people at Cambridge Art galleries have been holding me down with locations in Manhattan and Long island.

Most recently has been a fun run with Ovono agency at the CANNAVITA DISPENSARY in astoria queens. What projects are you currently working on or have planned for the near future? Currently been working on a whole new wave of pieces. attempting to take a more minimal approach breaking away from the maximalism that seems to have a hold on me. How can people stay updated on your latest work and follow your journey? Stay in the loop by following me on instagram for sure @ian_actual
