Inside the World of Artist & Model, “Cadence Hooks”

Cadence Hooks In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art, certain voices emerge with a resonance so profound that they shape the artistic dialogue of their time. One such voice is that of Cadence Hooks, a painter whose work seamlessly weaves together abstraction, emotion, and the raw essence of human existence. Through bold colors, intricate textures, and layered compositions, Hooks crafts an artistic language that transcends form, inviting viewers into a space where vulnerability and strength converge. Her work is not merely an exploration of aesthetics but a powerful narrative that delves into the complexities of connection, transformation, and the intrinsic relationship between humanity and nature.

A Journey Rooted in Exploration and Transformation
Born and raised in New York, Hooks' artistic journey began in childhood, where an early fascination with the human form laid the foundation for a lifelong pursuit of visual storytelling. Her passion for anatomy and color theory provided a structural depth to her work, allowing her to capture the intricacies of human emotion through the interplay of form and hue. Encouraged by mentors and an insatiable creative drive, Hooks honed her craft through private lessons, international residencies, and an unyielding curiosity about the world around her.

Her career has taken her across the globe, splitting her time between New York, South Africa, and Europe. Each destination serves as both muse and canvas, shaping the fluidity of her artistic practice.
The cultural diversity and natural splendor of these locales are embedded in her work, where influences of the landscapes she inhabits—whether the Atlantic coastline of Cape Town or the historic art enclaves of Barcelona—manifest in every brushstroke. Her international reach has allowed her to exhibit in some of the world's most revered artistic hubs, including Paris, New York, and Cape Town.

At the core of Hooks' work lies a fascination with elemental forces: water, symbolizing transformation and emotional fluidity, and stone, embodying permanence and resilience. These motifs thread through her abstracted human forms, creating a dynamic interplay between the body and the environment. Her work is a meditation on the tension between fragility and endurance, inviting the viewer to contemplate the ever-shifting nature of identity and experience.
The Essence of Hooks’ Work
Hooks’ distinctive style is a synthesis of gestural lines, expressive color palettes, and geometric abstractions, crafting a visual language that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. She believes that art should not merely be seen—it should be felt. Her paintings pulsate with energy, driven by the physicality of her process. Each brushstroke carries intention, each texture a trace of movement, as if the canvas itself breathes with the life she imbues into it.

Beyond the canvas, Hooks has expanded her artistic practice into immersive installations, notably the bark walls of the Arcadia Earth Museum in Las Vegas. This large-scale environmental piece, composed of intricately arranged tree bark, was not just a visual marvel but a powerful statement on ecological consciousness. It is this commitment to intertwining art with purpose that defines Hooks’ practice, as she continues to align her work with social and environmental advocacy.
As an artist deeply connected to nature, Hooks continuously explores the intricate relationship between humanity and the environment. Her latest series takes inspiration from the fluidity of water and the enduring presence of stone, reflecting the ever-changing yet immutable aspects of existence. Whether through paintings, installations, or activism, her work embodies the essence of resilience, movement, and transformation.
Art as Activism and Connection
For Hooks, art is more than a form of expression—it is a means of engagement, activism, and connection. Her commitment to using art as a vehicle for change extends beyond the gallery walls. She actively participates in fundraisers and community-driven projects, aligning herself with causes that amplify voices and support those in need. She has collaborated with organizations such as the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Uganda Food Forest Fundraiser, Wildfire Silent Auction, and Enchantment Gala, demonstrating her belief in the transformative power of art. Each of her contributions to these initiatives is imbued with a deep sense of responsibility to both the artistic and global communities she is a part of.
Her upcoming work, focused on wild horse advocacy and ocean conservation, underscores her dedication to using her platform to spark awareness and inspire action.

The Future of Hooks’ Artistic Legacy
Hooks’ artistic legacy is still unfolding, but its trajectory is unmistakably profound. With a career that spans prestigious exhibitions, international residencies, and a growing presence in the global art market, she continues to push the boundaries of contemporary abstraction. Interview with Hooks
When did you first discover your passion for art, and how did your journey as an artist begin?
My journey as an artist began in childhood, with an early fascination for the human form. I was constantly drawing figures—particularly nudes—and it was clear that art wasn’t just a pastime but an intrinsic part of who I was. Recognizing my talent and dedication, my family supported me with private painting lessons outside of school classes, which allowed me to develop my skills further. By the age of 10, I was already painting commissions, and in high school, I began receiving awards, including a blue ribbon that earned one of my works a place in the White House.

Despite my early success, my focus on art wavered after college as I juggled many passions and felt it was just a hobby, not a career. However, a turning point came when I showed my work to a close friend whose family owned a Book printing company, Assouline Books. After viewing my work, I was offered an oversized blank book, almost as large as me, and my friend simply said, “Fill it.” That gesture reignited my artistic ambition, and the book became a symbol of my commitment to creating meaningful work, and I filled it every day. This book was my first art show.
Driven by a desire to immerse myself in a European life, I applied for artist residencies across Europe and was accepted to many programs in Spain and Berlin. These experiences were transformative, showing me that art is not just a practice but a way of living—a way to merge culture, connection, and nature into a singular vision. Living and working in culturally and geographically stunning places fuels my creative practice. Nature, especially water, has always been thematic to my work. Whether creating in a castle in the south of France, surrounded by the Mediterranean’s hues, or painting on a vineyard outside Barcelona, surrounded by rich golds, I find myself constantly inspired by the interplay of landscapes and human emotion. Art for me is not just about reflection but also exploration—a way to seek profound beauty and harmony in the world around us.
Now, my life is a balance of adventure and creation. I divide my time between exhibiting in cities like New York and Los Angeles and discovering new inspirations in breathtaking locations. Each piece I create is a journal of my experiences, a visual language of connection, and an invitation to others to feel the wonder I find in the world.Despite my early success, my focus on art wavered after college as I juggled many passions and felt it was just a hobby, not a career. Cadence Hooks What inspired you to pursue a career in art? Were there any pivotal moments that shaped your path?
Art has always been my natural language—a way to tell stories and honor beauty, life, and intention. Storytelling lies at the heart of my work, connecting me to the world and shaping experiences that resonate universally.
Pivotal moments came early, thanks to incredible teachers who recognized my potential and encouraged me to push boundaries. They believed in my ability to tell stories in my own style, often submitting my work to contests and art schools without my knowledge. Their support gave me the confidence to pursue this path.
Residency programs have been transformative. At Estudio Nómada in Barcelona, I learned the value of critique, experimentation, and growth while being surrounded by fellow creatives. Later, my residency at Orquevaux provided an inspiring setting that solidified my commitment to creating art that reflects both daring exploration and emotional depth.

Breaking into the art world brought key milestones, such as participating in Art Basel, which expanded my connections to collectors and other artists. This exposure led to opportunities like LA Frieze and exhibiting in Cape Town, all of which helped shape my artistic voice.
Beyond creating, my role in arts management, including overseeing production at the Southampton Arts Center, taught me the importance of community. Building genuine connections and contributing to the art world has been as vital as the work itself.
For me, art is a way of life—a constant exploration of stories and human connection that bridges the past, present, and future while celebrating the beauty of existence.
Who are your biggest art influences or collaborators that have significantly impacted your style?
My influences are rooted in impressionism and modern figurative art, with a deep fascination for storytelling through light, color, and form. Spending countless hours at The Met has shaped my artistic philosophy, particularly the impressionist notion that "light is color." Monet’s exploration of light and repetition inspires my recurring series, such as Lips and Vines. These works delve into the idea of studying the same subject matter in infinite ways, reflecting how bodies in nature mirror the organic forms within us. I aim to celebrate this interconnectedness, emphasizing the unity between humanity and the natural world.

enny Saville’s fearless exploration of the human form and visible process has deeply influenced my work. Her works often showcase the artist’s process, with visible underdrawings and overlapping lines, giving her paintings a raw, unpolished energy, a practice found in my latest works. Her exploration of flesh through abstraction and painting on a large scale has deeply inspired me, as well as her own vulnerability, painting self portraits that are Deeply personal and challenging societal norms and shifting the gaze from objectification to empowerment. This ethos influences my approach to creating art that embraces imperfection and depth.
Caravaggio’s mastery of chiaroscuro and dramatic storytelling left a lasting impression on me when I saw his work in person at the Uffizi Gallery. The interplay of light and shadow in his paintings evokes a visceral emotional response, a technique I often aim to incorporate into my compositions. Similarly, Richard Diebenkorn’s bold use of color and structured planes has shaped my exploration of contemporary minimalism, pushing me to balance complexity with simplicity.
Beyond visual arts, I am inspired by raw, instinctual reactions, allowing my work to embody spontaneity and emotional authenticity. Whether painting or experimenting with new techniques, my process often reflects an impulsive, unfiltered connection to the moment. This balance between refinement and raw expression continues to shape my evolving style. Do you have a distinct genre or style in your Artwork ? How would you describe the essence of your painting?
Yes, my work has developed a distinct style that blends contemporary abstract figurative painting with expressive storytelling. Using bold, gestural lines, geometric shapes, and vibrant color palettes, I aim to capture the raw energy and emotion of the human experience. My process emphasizes imperfection and movement, often leaving traces of the artist's hand to reveal the story behind the work. I explore expansive abstract narratives, my work seeks to honor both individual stories and universal themes of connection, healing, and transformation.
What are some of the most recent art projects you’ve been a part of?
Recently, I had the honor of contributing a piece to the Enchantment Gala in East Hampton, an auction supporting the Hearst Castle Foundation’s preservation efforts. In December, four of my works were featured at Art Basel. Miami, which was a pivotal moment for expanding my connections with collectors and artists. I also held a solo show in New York City titled Reckoning, which explored themes of transformation and personal growth.
Each year, I revisit my Lips series while painting in Cape Town, drawing inspiration from the vibrant energy of the city. Currently, my work is on display at an atelier during Mexico City Art Week 2025, offering an intimate setting for visitors to experience my latest series. This exhibition is part of a broader initiative to connect with the local art community and collectors in Mexico City.
Being immersed in such a creative environment, I’m reflecting on what new ideas and series this unique setting will inspire.
Where can people listen to your art or purchase your series?

Are there any upcoming projects, albums, or collaborations you’re currently working on or planning for the future?
Currently, I’m working on a new series that I’ll be painting in my studio in New Mexico, with a focus on raising awareness for wild horse advocacy. This project is deeply personal and tied to my commitment to supporting causes I believe in. I’m excited about collaborating with animal rights activists and others who are working toward meaningful change.
Additionally, I’ve been gathering footage of ocean floors from my time diving in Mallorca, and I’m eager to transform that into a series that explores the connection between the ocean and my environmental activism. My goal is to bring attention to the fragility of our ecosystems through both art and advocacy.
Looking ahead, I’m also planning a few exciting exhibitions and installations that will further integrate my work with sustainability themes, combining art with activism in a way that brings awareness and call to action.
